Five new Fellows elected to the Academy of Social Sciences

Five UNSW researchers have been recognised for their distinguished achievements by being elected as Fellows of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA).

The UNSW researchers are among 39 new Fellows elected to the Academy for 2016.

The ASSA promotes excellence in the social sciences in Australia and in their contribution to public policy. Fellows are elected by their peers and are recognised for their distinguished achievements and exceptional contributions made to the social sciences across 18 disciplines.

UNSW’s new Fellows are:

• Professor Louise Chappell, Professor of Politics, UNSW Arts & Social Sciences
• Professor Louisa Degenhardt, Professor of Epidemiology and NHMRC Principal Research Fellow, UNSW’s National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre
• Professor Richard Holden, Professor of Economics and ARC Future Fellow, UNSW Business School
• Professor Andrew Martin, Professor of Educational Psychology, UNSW Arts and Social Sciences
• Professor Jane McAdam, Scientia Professor of Law and Director of UNSW’s Andrew & Renata Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law

Professor Nicholas Fisk, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) congratulated the new Fellows.

"The election of five stellar academics is testimony to the extraordinary breadth and influence of research at UNSW. Their success demonstrates the comprehensive nature of UNSW’s research excellence, which spans the humanities, business, and law as well as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines”.

Over one hundred UNSW staff members are now Fellows of the ASSA, which is one of the four most prestigious learned academies in Australia.

The President of the ASSA, Professor Glenn Withers AO, announced the new Fellows will be installed at the Academy’s Annual Symposium and General Meeting from 7-9 November 2016.
